Commuting by Bike

It has been a long time, what with the pandemic that I have commuted to work. November marked the date that my day job required its staff to return to the physical office after 21 months of working from home. The nights have become darker but thinking back to the last time I was in the office back in March 2020, I was really enjoying cycling to and from work.

I found this was an easy way to rack up some easy miles without really thinking about it. My commute is around 15 miles each way so a nice 30 miles a day. Recovery rides are one thing I have always struggled with incorporating in my training. I made sure I was getting in my key sessions in the week and a long ride on a Sunday but the recovery rides were often cut short or forgone altogether.

As far as I am concerned the journey has to happen one way or another, so you might as well make it enjoyable and productive.

Commuting by bike adds very little extra time onto my normal commute, and by the end of the day my easy/recovery ride has been completed. So once I am home, all I have to do is have a nice warm bath and a cup of tea.

Commuting by bike is also a great way to improve your health, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint. Here are some of the benefits of commuting by bike:

  1. Improved physical health: Cycling is a low-impact form of exercise that can help to improve cardiovascular health, build muscle, and increase endurance.

  2. Reduced stress: Cycling can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels, which can lead to improved mental health and well-being.

  3. Environmental benefits: Cycling is a sustainable mode of transportation that produces zero emissions, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to driving or taking public transportation.

  4. Cost savings: Commuting by bike can help you save money on gas, parking, and public transportation costs.

  5. Improved productivity: Studies have shown that regular exercise can help to improve cognitive function and productivity, which can lead to better job performance.

Incorporating cycling into your daily routine can help you achieve your fitness goals, reduce your carbon footprint, and save money. If you’re new to cycling, start by taking short rides and gradually increasing your distance and intensity. Be sure to wear a helmet and other protective gear, and follow all traffic laws and safety guidelines.
